Cut off the spare rib?

Sounds like a J section belt with 2.34 mm rib spacing. For wider belts ribs are added with the same spacing so, as KWIL suggests, cutting off the extra rib will be fine. If you don't fancy this then a 4 rib J section belt is readily available from e.g. Bearing Boys **LINK**

You are measuring the length in a different way to them. Put 'J section belt dimensions' into Google and you will find out what the correct belt code is for your application. Length is measured at the pitch diameter so their 483 pitch measurement will be considerably longer than your 475mm outside measurement. You will need a pitch measurement less than 475mm to achieve a 475mm outside measurement. Does the one you have not have a code written on it? If so, you need the same belt just with the appropriate part of the code altered to denote four ribs not five.

Not the code from the old 4-rib. The code from the new 5-rib. 80% of the 5-rib code will be correct for its 4-rib equivalent. Do your research on translating the code and you will be able to supply the missing 20%.
