This compound slide has joined my "it will be useful one day" collection. It has the feel and appearance of being a quality item, with a slick action, thrust bearings and adjustable gib strips. Curiously, it incorporates a small lever and secondary range of movement perpendicular to the feed screw. I'm not sure how that would be used.

If anyone could enlighten me or even suggest a machine this belonged to I would be interested to hear from you.

I have a Karger DL1 lathe which has a similar topslide with the extra lever operated slide. Unfortunately the extra slide takes up so much room the only small tools can be used, and I have had to use an alternative one.

Built-in screwcutting tool retraction is a nice feature.

From the colour (if original) Possibly Raglan?

Since most machinists turn the topslide to half the thread angle and so that the tool only cuts on one flank, having the retracting part at right angles is quite useless. I never found a use for it !

It should still retract the tool out beyond the OD to clear for reverse traverse, should it not? Then reset the retraction and then add the next depth of cut on the topslide dial?

Seems like it would be just about as easy to wind the cross slide dial. But perhaps the quicker action of the retractor allows you to cut closer to a shoulder or to screwcut at higher rpm, which is always very handy.

Do you mean you have a machine with the retracting function, but you never use it?

How do you know 'most machinists' set the topslide to half angle? I for one have never done that.

As with Guinness – try it, you might like it!

Proper use of a retracting top slide makes screw cutting a little less likely to go pear shaped.

Thanks, I guess it could be used that way.

It looks like original (chipped) paint to me.
