Hi I have just acquired a TDS 3 and I had to split the top off to move it.

I took notice of how the upper belt was routed and thought it would be easy enough to thread back in. (It's a segmented type of belt).

However I have got the top on in place and the belt seems caught on something in the upper half, it won't come down low enough so it can be re-joined.

Are there any tips or tricks for refitting the upper belt? Any access to it from the top? I have put my hand in the small hole from underneath a few times but it's very tight and I don't want to end up in a+e with a lathe stuck to my arm!

Yep been there. You can't easily get the belt around the top of the pulley as it fouls some feature on the inside of the headstock casting. Here's what to do – get some string and stick the end of it in the vee groove with a dab of grease. Turn the spindle so that the string is drawn around in the groove then tie the string to the belt and pull the belt around with the string.

Nice one, I shall use a thread, and to the thread I'll tie some twine, and to the twine, some string…. etc etc.

Got it done, but the string came off the belt half way over, after a right faff even getting it there.

I ended up stickng a stout iron wire up the other side, then fishing it down, against some resistance.

Got the lamp wire in place (I cut it to separate the two halves) so it just needs joining with a choccy block.

My last job is to find a 4-way pulley for the electric motor (16mm dia shaft) then I'm up and running! Still looking on eBay.
