At present the mill is fitted with a Velocette pre war MAC Gearbox which I still have problems with.

If I cannot resolve the problems I still have the original Pulley assembly so I could get the mill going again.

The original motor has been replaced with Amtecs AMAS SR80G3 1 hp 1410 rpm (I do not know any details of the original motor)

Spoke to 2 ME members at last Fridays meeting and they said the lowest speed was too high to use a Fly cutter. They suggested using the largest pulleys on the motor and Gearbox to reduce the speed.

This would cause the 2 belts to foul the Column (i could make 2 Belt tensioners to push the belts away from the Column)

The Spindle and Gearbox pulleys have not been changed by me but I am not sure if I have to change the motor pulley when the new motor was fitted (Old and new motors may have had different spindle diameters)

      The detail information is :-

      Motor 1 hp 1410 rpm.

Pulley diameters on Motor 100 mm & 125 mm.

Pulley diameters on Gearbox 60 mm & 155 mm.

      Pulley diameters on Spindle 130 mm , 150 mm , 170 mm & 195 mm.

      Spindle speeds using Gearbox 820 rpm , 1200 rpm , 1550 rpm & 2050 rpm.

The distance range between the Motor and Gearbox is approx. 23 mm to 34 mm.

The distance range between the Gearbox and Spindle is approx. 21 mm to 31 mm.

Obviously the maximums would cause the pulleys to foul the edges of the bottom section of the belt , pulley Gearbox cover.

I do not know what the 2 belt sizes were when this arrangement was first put in use.

What I need to know is :-

Will the new motor be O/K. to give the correct Chester 20 Eagle speeds.

      Speeds of Chester 20 Eagle.

      Original Motor pulley diameter.

Both belt sizes when the Gearbox is swopped out for the original pulley assembly.

Speeds and Belt sizes should be in the manual which I don't have.dsc04869.jpg

Tried to rotate this photo of drawing .

Able to rotate in Windows 11 but when added to my ME album it didn't state rotateddsc04871.jpg

You could sell the gearbox for a nice tidy sum and use the proceeds to fit inverter vid system.

I'm not familiar with your mill so I did a bit of googling but that only came up with 25 and 30 types. If I was in your position, I would bite the bullet and ditch the complicated belt arrangement and buy a vfd and 3-phase motor combination. This will obviate the need for a gearbox, which you say is problematic anyway. Not what you wanted to hear, maybe, but will solve your problem at a stroke. I did a similar upgrade to my Warco VMC mill and am very pleased with it.

PS. With regard to photo orientation, I always load my photographs into an image manipulation application – in my case the classic form of Paint for Windows – and resave it as a jpeg before adding to an album on here. This strips out the meta data.

                  Hi John and Burnard

I am quite interested in getting rid of the gear box

Could you give me more information on what would be involved

                  What is a VID?

I presume that I would need a single phase to 3 phase convertor , a 3 phase motor and some sort of 3 phase speed controller..

A Block diagram and circuit diagram would explain a lot.

i am 77 retired at 57 and was a Main Frame Computer engineer but have not kept up with advances in technology so I am a bit rusty.

                    Malcolm,

The drive to your mill is very similar to that used on my VMC. See the picture below:

                    warco vmc belt arrangement

The pulley arrangement in the centre of the drivetrain is effectively a jockey wheel and allows the belts to be adjusted for tension and/or be repositioned on their respective pulleys to change the ratios. I have not changed the positions you see above since fitting the uprated 2HP 3-phase motor and the VFD (Variable Frequency Drive). I haven't found it necessary to alter it as the VFD, via the remote pendant unit, provides all the control required.

On the mill, I use a Huang Yang VFD and a pendant control from the Internet for the mill and similar arrangements for the lathe and shaper. I'm too lazy to make my own and prefer to just throw money at that sort of thing. There are numerous YouTube videos on VFD installation and the manual provides adequate information on wiring it all up. If all else fails, it's been covered on this forum many times and a site search from halfway down the home page will give you hours of fun reading on the subject.

Feel free to PM me if I can be of any further assistance ,

                    John

Looks like I need a better pair of glasses.

I read vfd as vid . Know I know what a vfd is

Don’t be too hard on yourself. You likely read the first reply and did not realise the error (in that).

Hi, like John Hinkley, I can't recall Chester doing an Eagle 20, and I've not found any adverts for a Chester one, though that doesn't mean they didn't do this size. This style of milling machine is called the generic Taiwanese type lathes.co.uk and were badged by quite a few companies, the Minor one from Warco in the ad from 1981 below, shows it with the table size about the same as Malcolm has stated his is in his previous thread. The belt drive on all these machines has the same layout, but the speeds may well be different for each size of machine, the year they were made and/or the company that sold them.
