      Hi,

Has anyone out there got a Lorch LAS Lathe ? I'm in the process of rebuilding a 1960 LAS. I'm looking for information on the selector shaft bearing arrangement, mine was snapped and the bearing missing on the end when I brought it.

Also any info on taking the spindle assemble out without too much disassembly of the epicyclic back gear for belt replacement.

      Thanks

      Tony

          Tony,

          have you seen this?

It might be worth contacting Adam to see how he went with his belt change

Your “selector shaft arrangement” – do you mean the shaft and bearing that enables the epicyclic gears? Mine only had the inner race on the shaft when I got it.

The "select shaft arrangement" yes its that part. Where yours has a least an inner race, mine has sheered off the 'cam' part of the shaft that the bearing attaches to, so I'm going to have to make a new one. Do you have any pictures of your arrangement that you could share with me please. Here's mine if the pictures attach.

              Hi Tony

I've got a new bearing for these sitting in my toolbox, I used to work where we had quite a few of these and I used to look after the maintenance of them, if you PM me I'll post it to you.

Quite easy to remove the spindle for belt change, but never dismantle the epicyclic back gear unless you have to, horrible fiddly job to put back together, our very upright foreman fitter used words I never knew he knew whilst grappling with one.

                Hi Tony

Here's a couple of pictures (hopefully) of the backgear selector on my LAS. The bearing appears to be just a press fit on the eccentric but I didn't want to remove the whole spindle to take the shaft out for a picture sorry.

                Hope that helps

                Gary

The inner race on mine was reasonably easy to slide off the spindle – a slight friction fit. The bearing really cannot go anywhere once the spindle has been locked.
