I have been working in the workshop over the last week or so. Over last few days I have got a chesty cough, SHMBO said she would get some Lemsip when she went out. She tried 3 shops all sold out ! Looked on the Bay loads of over price items there. Typical of rip off Britain. Suppose it's more hot toddies on a night.

Go to a chemist, you can probably get Lemsip capsules. My wife got a couple of packs last week as she is always needing them through the winter.

Lemsip is just paracetamol plus powdered citric acid. Boots standard tablets have twice the active ingredient. They used to do big bottles of two hundred until people started to overdose on them. Hot whiskey and lemon is of course an essential part of the treatment. Makes colds fun. cheeky

Lemsip (and most similar products) is not just Paracetamol. It also has a decongestant , Phenylephrine hydrochloride. It contains more ascorbic acid (vitamin C) than citric acid.

I always by the generic (Tesco as they are loca t me. Other brands avilablel) version.

I always have mine with hot rum, makes having a cold worthwhile smiley Has anyone got a cure for a runny nose?

Our local Tesco has Lemsip this morning, I prefer this rather than capsules as if you have a cold you need plenty of liquid so a mug of Lemsip is more comforting

Went to get some Lemsip for SWMBO and the chemist said as she is on blood pressure tablets she can't have them as they react. Honey and lemon hot drink only.

Whisky, hot water and brown sugar. If that doesn't work cut down on the water and sugar

When I last had a cold, my local pharmacist refused to sell me Contact 400 since I am on medication to lower blood pressure.

I find a hot drink with HONEY helps with coughing.

By a big bottle of Brandy or whatever your tipple is. You won't care about the cold.

P.S i have many colds a year. But have never had flu in my lifetime ,,strange but true. In fact never had much apart from a Heart attack in 2012 & cancer in 2008. Doh.

Not just Lemsip, there are many odd shortages in the shops at the moment. No tinned tomatoes, mince, Lasagne Sauce, Coffeemate or Nougat in my big local Tesco last week. Almost out of filtered milk, and the cereal section was empty, though I didn't need any.

Several reasons. Leaving the EU, high energy prices slowing down businesses, global supply difficulties, ongoing recovery from COVID and its reappearance, value of the pound sagging, reduced confidence in the UK economy, labour shortages, high sickness rate including a nasty-ish flu, war in Europe, threat to Taiwan, and more.

Faced with a temporary shortage I switch to alternatives. Another cold-cure, or make my own from plain paracetamol, lemon juice, and maybe a generic decongestant. Just don'[t overdose, and make sure the mix isn't contra-indicated with any prescription drugs.

A daily vitamin + mineral supplement is also worth taking at the first sign of a cold. The human body is pretty good at fighting the common cold, but it needs the raw materials to do so; to make extra white blood cells and other things to destroy the viruses. Do any of us eat a truly balanced diet, and therefore have all the trace elements and minerals in our bodies?

Probably not. I like to ensure my body has everything it needs to fight infections. I get occasional sniffles and sneezes, but I cannot remember the last time I had an actual cold or flu, and I have never taken a flu jab.

Agreed, even if you do eat enough of the required foodstuffs for a “balanced” diet (whatever that is) you may not adequately absorb all the nutrients from it. I read some time ago that the older you get the harder it is to absorb some nutrients. Then of course there are medications and other things we consume that don’t help in this respect either. I have a regular prescription for vitamin D as the doctor noted I was low after a blood test some years ago. According to some sources it’s vital and many if not most people have low levels during the winter here in the UK.

It seems to me that anybody coming into the country from anywhere should be required to be put in secure quarantine for a month – and I mean really secure – somewhere like the Prison on Dartmoor.

Mc, You’re not alone in your thoughts, the problem with the availability of international travel is that a deadly virus can become apparent in a far flung country and within hours passengers from there have dispersed worldwide, and authorities are slow to react, our own government is a prime example. We can only hope that the China Covid crisis is not as serious as some have forecast. Dave W
