Parallel to my other post on my recent skip find I also found 2 steel bars with what might be described as racing green paint on one end.

Is there a standard that all uk steel stockists use to label each type of steel they supply?

Not sure how standard it is, but could be EN1A (or 304 stainless):

Thanks Andy, I thought it could be EN1a certainly not stainless as indicated by the small amount of surface rust.

Anyone else have any ideas on standardisation of paint codes….

Probably not! When I asked my local supplier why two lengths of the same mild-steel had different colours, he replied: 'the colour indicates who we got it from'.

Tubal Cain's Model Engineer's Handbook (recommended) explains there are several 'standard' colour codes 'but the use of any of these would demand a workshop full of paint tins.' He offers an abbreviated code as a substitute. In it Green indicates Phosphor Bronze…

Colours aren't standardised as Andrew says. However the three stockholders (Steel Express, Parker Steel & Acton Bright Steel) that I've bought EN1A from recently have all been green marked. I always write on the bar remainder what it is when I store EN8, 16 24T etc. with what it actually is rather than rely on the colour marking.

To chuck another combination into the pot, my local stockholder uses Light Green for EN8
Red=EN-1A, Pink=EN-1a(Pb), Blue=EN-3b, Green/Yellow=EN-16

Where I buy stainless, it comes in Redd or Blue, depending on 303 or 316, but I can't remember which way around, though some comes as yellow

Certificated en3b I bought recently (with the mill cert) was dark green on the end!
