      Hi there,

As i am relatively new to milling i was wondering what i am doing wrong. When i am milling (conventionally) over the X axis and traverse over the Y, my mill performs well. But when i move the X,Y table over the Y axis and traverse over the X axis my mill creates little steps in the surface. The steps occur on the side opposite where the mill is cutting. It looks like the mill is cutting a 0.08 of a millimeter or a 0.003. I can feel ridges whit my fingernail.

I have tried to tram my mill to my best abilities.

      Kind regards,

      Maarten

Does sound like a tram problem in the front back plane sometimes called nod. Have you got a dti that you can mount in the spindle and rotate it by hand in a circle? you are aiming for the smallest amount of variation all round.

Would also help to know what diameter cutter gave those steps and also how far you were moving over per pass

            Hi Maarten,

Harold Hall has written about setting up the milling machine and milling flat surfaces, see here.
