      Good afternoon

I’m after recommendations for steam model kits..

Mamod and the like are fine ( I like the roadster car) but not particularly challenging on assembly skills, on the other hand I’m don’t want a set of castings and drawings.! something in the middle would be ideal

So a steam kit with supplied parts that needs hand finishing and assembling would be ideal..Any suggestions?

      Thanks

      JR

Take a look at Steam Traction World but it's a bit of a jump up from a Mamod.

There are also the Maxitrak kits which would fall somewhere between the two

For something very much closer to the Mamod end of the scale the basic steam and Stirling engines from Forest Classics may be suitable.

The bolt together, fully machined versions of Stuart engines or indeed any of the Polly locomotives could also be an option.

              Hi JR,

Have you looked at the Stuart Turner website? (Technically now known as Stuart Models):

              **LINK**

They supply all levels from individual castings, casting sets, full material sets (castings plus bar stock, fixings, graphite thread, gasket material, etc), machined kits, through to "ready to run" completed models.

Best bit is they sell all their castings as individual items so you can buy random sized flywheels for your latest freelance design, or replacements for that vital casting you just cocked up when you weren't paying attention on your mill/lathe…

Just a recommendation from a satisfied customer who has bought lots of stuff from them over the years. (My seven year old grandson is currently building a Stuart S50 with Grandad's help, in Grandad's workshop, with Grandad standing very closely and nervously behind while Grandson uses the lathe…)

              All the best,

              Ian

Thank all for your replies..I have lots of options to explore now (although I might have a problem getting the kit costing £48,000 + past my significant other!)

                thanks

Have a look at Beng's models (German). Really good kits with good instructions

Te Bengs Model site is very interesting ..Can they supply English instructions? My technical German is very poor

I'm sure it says somewhere on the site something about '10 pages in English' (Instructions) when it was outlining the contents of one of the kits I just happened to look at – can't remember which I'm afraid. Perhaps have a look at the full details of any model and see if it says similar.

Hmmm – re Beng's kits instruction sheet translation. – unless they have recently changed, the printed sheets for their ;Sophie' are quite dreadful. Sentence construction and terminology are just gobbledygook ! No problem for a proper engineer, who wouldn't need them, but left me completely stumped.sad

                            Bengs reply

                            “Hi there,
We have an English translation for some of our models.
Which model are you interested in.

                            Mit freundlichen Grüßen

                            Patrick Bengs”

                            So more research needed!
