Never actually understood why a dynamometer car is needed . All that is to be measured is drawbar pull against time and distance .
Simple draw bar based on off the shelf load cell , transmit readings continuously to trackside base station by off the shelf data transmitter , monitor position of train on track by a small number of active or passive trackside detectors . Could even use GPS in some cases .
Put the above data into a PC and obtain the transient and final values of everything in instant graphical form .
Add in the coal and water used etc at end of run and get instant analysis of efficiency and any subsidiary analysis required .
