Hi all the attached picture(sorry for orientation) is from Andrew Smith, s book "Building The Victoria"

I am a bit confused by the highlighted text.

How can it be dead center and at the end of its stroke.

Am I missing something or is it a typo.

That's what dead centre means, as in top dead centre on a car engine. Probably derives from if you move the crank very slightly the piston doesn't move, well only imperceptibly.

The text is probably missing a word like 'top', as in top dead centre (or even bottom dead centre).

Duncan/Chris. Thanks for clearing that up.

Can you have a look at these pics and give your opinion on them as to whether this is the norm or not.

The forward port is slightly larger than the rear but its the positioning of same when piston is fully extended/retracted, how one has a bigger gap to the slide valve than the other

Provided the valve covers both ports when in it's mid position the engine should still run and will just need a bit of playing about with valve rod length to get both strokes even.

You may also want to give the port face a gentle rub on some wet & dry laid on a flat surface to get rid of the remaining machining marks so you don't get any leakage.
