      Hi all

I've just got a new to me lathe and it has a d1-3 camlock spindle , it came with 2 chucks which were very stiff so I've stripped and cleaned the 3 jaw which is now much smoother. On the spindle nose there is the 3 cams for tightening the chuck and 3 grub screws. Are the grub screws just for holding the cams in place or are they used for locking the cams once tight ? The grub screws are quite loose how tight should they be?

      Gary

The grub screws just hold the cams in place. You tighten the cams by rotating them clockwise with the key, they don't need locking.

There should be a sping and hardened steel plunger under the grub screws which acts on an indent to hold the cam in the 'open' position for removing the chuck. Could be they need winding in a little to give the springs a bit of pressure. Could also be that someone has had it apart and missed out replacing the springs orthings might be gummed up.

You'll love camlock. As John says above the cams stay closed by friction, no need to lock them shut.
