My lathe (a Portass PD5) has a Brook Gryphon single phase 0.33HP motor. It has 4 terminals, which currently have 4 separate wires to the Dewhurst switch. I'm tidying up the installation, and am planning to replace the 4 separate wires with a 5-core cable (for the 4 terminals plus earth). The colours available in the cable are blue, brown, black, grey and yellow/green. Obviously the yellow/green one should be earth, but is there a standard or recommended allocation of colours for the other terminals? By instinct I think I would use blue and brown for the main winding (brown for live, blue for neutral) and black and grey in some random order for the start winding. Any comments or suggestions?

      Thanks – Rowan

Sounds logical to me, as long as you identify (label) the conductors in the Dewhurst anyone following you will be informed.
Make sure the 5 core is at least 250v rated and fuse according to the cable rating.

Hi Rowan I have used the same as your proposed wireing on my lathe there is nothing wrong with that but I have labelled each wire with a number or letter corresponding to its connection on the motor and switch number.

When doing this sort of thing I use my cheap (LiDL) laminator to make a durable label with the colours and any other useful data on it. The small "business card" film sizes work well for this. Cut the paper to the right size and trim excess laminator film, it stays stuck together just fine.

Sounds spot on to me. Like Emgee said make sure that the cable is rated for 230/240 volts and the cross sectional area is large enough for the motor current.

The colours of your cable are for three phase, nothing wrong with that but the cores should be marked to help stop anyone thinking it's a three phase motor. Brown and Blue are fine for the main winding but when it comes to the start winding the polarity changes with direction. These should both be marked brown (a turn of brown insulating around the core will be enough) in the motor and the switch. I also like the idea of the lables things like that can be a great help to anyone coming after you.

                Hope this helps Tom.
