I'm sure someone will know the answer to this, but it's got me stumped – what is the extra screw on the rear side of a Boxford (Model C Bench type) for? That's the slotted on in the photo.

Pretty sure it's an original fitting – the hole it fits into is plugged by something that does not appear to be removable – no slot or hex recess – so it just sits there, sticking out about an inch and a half.

        Thanks,

        Rob

Does it stop the tailstock clamping lever from going down too far to a position where it hits the carriage maybe?

I don't have a Boxford, but if it has a lever type lock on the tailstock, (as my Warco has), it could be a stop for the lock lever.

I can confirm that it is indeed a stop for the clamping lever as described by the others

Oh, don't I feel daft now! How obvious. In my defence, it was off the lathe when I started dismantling it for painting, so not really seen it in position. blush

                Thanks guys.

We all have our blind spots and "of course, doh!" moments.

I have just like that on my Craftsman lathe, never knew what it was for [really ] but it does prevent the locking lever from falling down on the bed. And I was thinking about cutting it off !!

Contrary to what you would expect with increasing age and hence experience, I am getting more and more of them

A K A "Senior Moments", or lapses of concentration.

Now, where did I put that 6" rule?

What's a 6" rule… I have a calibrated tea stirring tool, It's 19 mm wide x 155 mm long with imperial & metric markings to tell you the height of liquid in your cup… dont know
