Hi all hope everyone staying safe and well

although I am a key worker I am only working two day’s a week so as I have plenty of time I have just started to make some clock parts and screws with my Cowells 90 ME but I am finding that I am not getting a very good finish with brass although I get a better finish on mild steel, I am using HHS tooling and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what could be wrong, I have tried different speeds, would carbide be any better.

any help would be appreciated Dell

HSS tools for brass should ideally have zero top rake, tools which cut well on MS may not work so well. They should also be very sharp. And run fast. Carbide would not be better, carbide insert tools unless you use the polished ones made for aluminium have a somewhat rounded edge.

Rounded cutting tip and high polish to cutting edges. Look up Goniostat but it doesn't have to be as elaborate as the pictures you will see.
