I'm just finalising installing a ratmat Link

Now I understand the basics of how and why high voltage arcing happens . The ratmat tiles are put together a bit like a jigsaw with contacts between tiles – a bit of a pain as it goes to get them all going together without some trying to bend up as the tile is fitted but practice gets that done. I ran a continuity check on each junction before and after screwing down (just using the buzzer function of a tester). the most common arcing happens where there is an under/over rail most easily solved by placng a slip of plastic between.

The question is that at when down to just 2 or 3 points arcing they were doing so rhythmically as in point A would arc twice then be silent as point B arced three times and then repeat to A … I would have expected that to be random?

(Oh, and the reason for the Ratmat is that the beggars ate my expensive car to the tune of several £K repairs – probably 'cos when charging it becomes nice and cosy warm and keeping rats away from a farm yard backing on to woodland is nigh impossible..)

I wonder if the arcing heats the area slightly which changes the gap so the other weak point arcs while the first point cools, just an idea. I was hoping for a rat terminator rather than just a deterrent sad

That reason did cross my mind too..but thought I;d ask the knowledgeable…

As for a terminator then I guess you could attach a more powerful energiser as used for electric fence control of cattle but might upset OH if it deals the final blow to her cats and hens.

ZapRat traps kill them but any bait/trap/poison doesn't guarantee to get them all so i figured this the most reliable way to protect vehicle.

We had vermin eat the injector pulse harness on our Yeti, we bought a deterrent that emits a high pitched sound and flashes. No more problems with eaten wiring but I'm not sure if its down to that or my BSA Airsporter…
