I made the pistons for my 5" gauge BR standard class 2 many months ago but did not fit any seals,

The design is for 1/4" square packing, but this appears to be a bit crude. Would "O" rings or CI piston rings be better ?

What are your cylinders made from? If they are gunmetal then don't use piston rings. If they are cast iron, then piston rings are ideal; teflon impregnated soft packing is good if the slot is a good fit. "O" rings are fine if the bore has a high finish, or else they will wear rapidly.

The piston and cylinders are cast iron, So will look at the rings or the teflon packing.

Making cast iron rings is not difficult, can't be as I managed it. Tubal Cain described it in ME many moons ago, but it was badly misprinted. Also described in his 'model engineers handbook, but the description of how to make was better in ME, just the equations (which you don't need to understand) printed wrong I think. The trick is to make them of small section, mine are 0.045" square in 1.5" bores. Don't use rings out of chain saw engine, too high wall pressure.

I might be able to dig out the articles if the tidying gremlin hasn't struck, let me know if you're interested. Of course if you already made the pistons this will be less attractive.

My cylinder is cast iron and piston aluminium, with cast iron rings. Rings made as a cylinder with a running fit on the bore, then parted off to the length required and split with a thin Dremel blade.  They were then expanded to provide a bit of spring as described below.

The drawing for the piston on my engine showed 2 rings in separate grooves but I put both rings in the same groove with the gaps spaced 180 degrees apart. The theory being, that the gap will be sealed.

Thanks for replies, I will spend the day in the workshop and make some CI rings. Will go for 1/16th square. I will have to machine new pistons as the originals were machined for 1/4" packing.
