        Hi all,
I am trying to find information, articles and photos that relate to the models and articles produced by my Great Grandfather H.A. Taylor ( 1888 – 1980 ) and would be extremely grateful for any information or sources of information provided by the members of these forums.
I would be particularly interested in finding out the whereabouts of his models with a view to taking some photographs for a web site I am creating to commemorate his work.
I have found the two models located at York railway museum (who have been very helpful) along with some articles published in Model Engineer (still looking for some back issues where he was mentioned)
Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

        Dave

I’m sorry, I’ve only just seen your request.
There are some 49 references to H.A.Taylor in the ME ; I could copy the relevant pages to your email address should you so wish.
          Regards – Chris

That would be very kind, I have found some information and posted it at http://web.me.com/dpain/H.A.Taylor/Foreword.html

I have more information to post (when I get time) and also need to check and obtain approval for reproducing some of the material

            Thanks again for your help.

Some of your great grandfathers work also appears in Martin Evans’ book ‘The Model Steam Locomotive’ (Argus Books 1983),the images of the LNWR tank and the Black 5 also appear on your very interesting website.

                Hi David,

Have you seen the picture on page 183 of J A Radford’s “improvements & accessories for your lathe” with the note saying it is the author, because it is the same picture you have of your relative H A Taylor sitting at a desk. On your site you make no mention of your Great Grandfather being J A Radford.
                I’m just a bit puzzled.

ME 4192 (4 April 2003) contained Part 5 of Martin Evans’ reminiscences “Early Days” which included a picture captioned “The late H.A.Taylor of Bletchley”.

ME 4195 (16 May 2003) contained an editorial “Taylor or Radford?” in which it was reported that several readers, all of whom were owners of the J.A.Radford book, had written to say that this picture was incorrectly captioned.  The editors surmised that the compiler of this book (a compilation of Mr Radford’s ME articles) appeared not to have noticed that it is the lower half of the page bearing the photograph of Mr Taylor (ME 3438 7 April 1972) which carries the continuation of an article by Mr Radford and reproduced in the book in question.  They considered, that due to a tight publication schedule the error was not noticed, and Mr Radford’s book carries the picture of Mr Taylor.

What a mine of information you guys are. Who in my family would have known of the error in placing my great grandfathers picture in J.A. Radford’s book?
I can definitely confirm the picture of my Grandfather at his desk is, in fact, him as it the last memory of him I have as an apprentice engineer when a few friends and myself visited his home shortly before he passed away to view his work and enjoy the enthusiasm and pride he clearly took in his model making and attention to detail.
Although I have drifted from my engineering roots, I still take great pride from his accomplishments and wish to learn more of his abilities and skills than I was able to during his lifetime.
I have found 45+ references to his name in ME, and am trying to track down back issues so that I can build a better picture of his skills and abilities.
Any help with scanned articles (subject to copyright issues) would be much appreciated in building the web site commemorating his work.
Any and all help would be well received.

                    Best Regards

Thanks Guys for pointing out the error in the Radford book. Odd that they put an errata slip in for a drawing, but did not mention the picture cock-up.

Being an admirer of the late Jack Radford’s work and having made a number of his attachments, as described in the compendium of his work, I had always thought the photograph it contained was of Radford himself. Now I have no idea what he actually looked like. So, can someone post a picture of the ‘real’ Jack Radford or indicate where one might be found, please?

This, from 2009, might be of interest … if only the link in it didn’t produce a 404 error
